Signs you need new brakes

Why are my brakes squeeking?

Low brake pads

Glazing - over heating

This happens when your brake pads overheat – this happens in hotter climates but as well as using your brakes very often, for example going down a hill and you ride your brake all the way down.

You need to remember that a brake pad is very gritty fibres and rough, by overheating the brakes (glazing) you have now created a smooth surface.

What essentially this does is instead of grabbing your brake roter/brake disc it will slide across it and not stop you and will/can start squeaking.

solution to this

Contaminates

dust, water, rocks, rust.

what it does is fills the porous surface of the brake pads causing the squeak t form.

if it’s rained the previous night, what happens is a thin film of rust forms on the brake disc, so the first time you stop you will hear a squeaking sound.

faulty parts

it’s not very common, but sometimes the brand of the batch can be the reason why they squeak or can vibrate. we have had cases where we tried 3 different brands and the car would only stop squeaking when we put orginal brake pads.

I hear a grinding sound

you've finished your brake pads

you have reached the end of the brake pad and you are now rubbing the brake rotor/ brake disc on the metal that used to be your brake pads. when you start hearing this sound, it’s too late and this is dangerous, you are also damaging your brake disc which will require either skimming or new brake discs altogether.

over heating

the brake pads will look very spongy and look ve uneven. this isn’t as serious as the above.

Understanding your braking system

there are various types of brake systems. Some cars consist of one and some consist of a mix.

  • Brake drums & brake discs serve the same purpose. Their job is to stop the wheels. With a brake drum, the drum spins along with the wheel. brake drums are mostly found on old cars and at the back of the car. Most cars are now equipped with brake discs.
  • Brake pads are situated inside the calliper, press against the rotor/brake disc to prevent it from turning.

Benefits of Brake disc skimming and why it's needed.

brake disc skimming is a process of removing a small layer of material.

This is to achieve a smooth surface to prevent a variety of brake-related issues, such as scratching.

Due to the affordability of brake disc skimming, it’s become more popular than replacing your brake discs.

Once your brake discs have become too thin, you will then be required to replace your brake discs.

What is Brake fluid fluid flushing?

It’s highly recommended by manufacturers to flush/ review your brake fluid every 24 months or every 60 thousand Kilos.

The process to do this requires the mechanic to remove the brake fluid by syringing out the old fluid and flushing it with new brake fluid.

Price is dependant on the make and model of car you have.
