Mercedes Service B Workshop Code 606: What It Actually Means

Mercedes-Benz GLA in for a B service at Fangio Auto Hermanus

Your Mercedes dash is showing “Service B” and a code you have never seen before, maybe 606. This is common on Mercedes models fitted with Assyst Plus, the system that tracks wear rather than just kilometres. It is safe to keep driving to your service appointment. Here is what the code means, what it does and does not cover, and how to make sure the workshop reads it properly instead of guessing.

What you are noticing

  • The instrument cluster shows “Service B” (or “Service A”) on start-up, sometimes with a wrench symbol.
  • A number appears alongside it when you go into the service menu on the cluster, for example 606.
  • The car may also show a countdown in kilometres or days until the service is due.
  • You are not sure what the number means, or whether it changes what the workshop should actually do to the car.

What is usually causing it

Mercedes-Benz uses a system called Assyst Plus. Instead of a fixed “every 15,000 km, do the same list” schedule, the car’s computer tracks how the engine oil, filters and other components have actually been used and works out which service items are due. That assessment gets packaged into the workshop code on your dash — 606, 505, or another combination.

  • Code 606 is what shows up as “Service B”: Assyst Plus has flagged the items that typically make up a B service, including an engine oil and filter change, a pollen (cabin) filter replacement, and a major inspection.
  • Code 505 is what shows up as “Service A”: a shorter list built around an oil and filter change and a minor inspection.

The letter on the dash (A or B) is Mercedes’ simplified label for drivers. The number itself isn’t something you can read digit by digit — it’s a code that a technician enters into Mercedes-Benz’s WIS (Workshop Information System) software, which decodes it into the exact checklist of service items your car needs. That’s the real value of reading the code properly: it tells a technician precisely what to check and replace, not just “do a service.”

What happens if you leave it

Assyst Plus is warning you ahead of time, so there is usually no immediate danger in driving a normal week or two while you book. But putting it off for months does carry a cost:

  • Engine oil that has gone past its service life protects the engine less well, which adds wear over time.
  • A clogged pollen filter reduces airflow and aircon performance, and can leave a musty smell in the cabin.
  • Missed inspection items are how small issues (a worn brake component, a leak) turn into bigger, more expensive ones by the time they are caught.
  • On a car this closely computer-managed, letting the service interval run out doesn’t reset anything — the car keeps counting down into negative numbers, which is its way of telling you the window has closed.

What to do now

  • Keep driving normally. This is a scheduled maintenance flag, not a fault warning.
  • Go into your instrument cluster’s service menu to read the exact code (606, 505, or another combination) — the exact button sequence depends on your model and steering wheel controls, so check your vehicle’s own screens (such as a GLA 200 or C-Class) rather than following a generic guide.
  • Write the code down or photograph the screen before you call to book.

  • If you can’t find the code, that’s fine too — a technician can pull it directly from the car’s system when you bring it in.

What we do at Fangio

At Fangio Auto Hermanus, we read the Assyst Plus code directly from the vehicle and decode it through Mercedes-Benz’s own WIS software before starting work, rather than assuming every Mercedes needs the same generic “full service.” That means:

  • We confirm which items the system has actually flagged (for a 606/Service B, that’s the oil and filter change, pollen filter, and major inspection points).
  • We use the correct oil grade and genuine or OEM-equivalent filters for your model.
  • We carry out the full inspection list attached to that code, and reset the service interval on completion so your dash reading is accurate again.
  • A Service B on most Mercedes models takes a working day, depending on what the inspection turns up and parts availability.
  • Every service comes with our 12 month / 10 000 km warranty on labour.

Fangio Auto Hermanus is RMI approved, which means we’re assessed against motor industry standards for workshop practice — useful to know when you’re trusting someone to read a manufacturer’s diagnostic code correctly rather than eyeballing it.

If you’d like the general difference between an A and B service explained further, we’ve covered that separately in Mercedes-Benz A vs B Service. You can also see everything else we do for Mercedes-Benz vehicles on our Mercedes-Benz brand page.

Questions people ask

Is code 606 the same as Service B?
Yes. 606 is the workshop code your car’s computer generates for the items that make up a Service B: oil and filter change, pollen filter, and major inspection.

What does code 505 mean?
Code 505 is a Service A: an oil and filter change plus a minor inspection, without the extra items that 606 covers.

Can the code be wrong?
The code itself comes from the car’s own sensors and service history, so it’s reliable. The risk is a workshop skipping it and doing a generic service instead — which is why we read it directly rather than assume.

Do I need to know the code before I book?
No. It helps if you have it, but our technicians can read it from the vehicle when you bring it in.

Will a Service A ever turn into a Service B unexpectedly?
It can, if the car’s monitored components (like brake wear or transmission fluid condition) have used up their service life faster than usual. That’s the point of Assyst Plus — it responds to actual wear, not just a fixed interval.

Does this apply to all Mercedes models?
Assyst Plus and this A/B service naming is used across most current Mercedes-Benz passenger models, including the GLA range. If you’re not sure whether your model uses it, our team can confirm when you call.
