Cambelt Replacement Before It Snaps

A cambelt, also called a timing belt, keeps your engine's valves and pistons moving in step. When it snaps they collide, and a belt job becomes an engine rebuild. At Fangio Auto we replace cambelts at the manufacturer's interval at both our Randburg and Hermanus branches, fitting the belt, tensioner and water pump as one kit so the job is done once.

What We Do

Cambelt Replacement at Fangio Auto

A cambelt job done properly is the belt, everything it drives and everything that keeps it tight.

New cambelt fitted at Fangio Auto

Cambelt Replacement

The belt replaced at the manufacturer's interval, or straight away if it shows cracks, fraying or oil contamination.

Old and new engine water pumps at Fangio Auto

Water Pump

On most belt-driven engines the water pump sits behind the cambelt. We replace it in the same job so you never pay the labour twice.

Cambelt tensioner and idler pulley assembly

Tensioner & Idlers

A new belt on a tired tensioner slips or snaps early. The tensioner and idler pulleys are replaced as part of the kit.

Worn cambelt checked at Fangio Auto

Interval Check

Not sure when it was last done? We check the service history and the belt itself and tell you whether it is due.

Timing chain components next to a cambelt kit

Belt or Chain?

Tell us the make, model and engine and we confirm whether your car runs a cambelt or a timing chain, before quoting.

Vehicles being inspected in the Fangio Auto workshop

Auxiliary Belt

The fan belt that drives the alternator and power steering is checked while the covers are off and replaced if it is due.

Warning Signs

When to Book a Check

A cambelt rarely warns you before it goes, so the interval matters more than the symptoms. Book a check if:

Your car has reached the manufacturer's cambelt interval in kilometres or years You bought the car used and there is no record of the belt being done Ticking or a rubbing noise from the front of the engine A squeal on start-up or under load Oil or coolant leaking near the cambelt cover The engine misfires, runs rough or will not start

Got Questions?

Cambelt Replacement - FAQs

Is a cambelt the same as a timing belt?

Yes. Cambelt is the everyday South African term and timing belt is the manufacturer's term. It is one part, a toothed rubber belt that keeps the camshaft and crankshaft turning in time with each other.

When should a cambelt be replaced?

It depends on the engine. Most makers set an interval between 60,000 km and 120,000 km, or a number of years, whichever comes first. Rubber ages even when the car stands, so a low-mileage older car can still be due. We confirm the interval for your engine.

What happens if the cambelt snaps?

On an interference engine the pistons hit the open valves. Bent valves, damaged pistons and often a cylinder head repair follow. Replacing the belt on time costs a fraction of that.

Why replace the water pump with the cambelt?

Because the pump usually sits behind the belt, so the labour to reach it is the same. A pump that fails later means paying that labour again, and a leaking pump often takes the new belt with it.

Does my car have a cambelt or a timing chain?

It depends on the engine, not the badge. Tell us the make, model, engine and year and we will tell you which it has. If it is a chain, see our timing chain replacement page.

Which branch does cambelts?

Both. Randburg and Hermanus replace cambelts and quote before any work starts. Pick your nearest branch on the contact page.
