Timing Chain Replacement Before It Damages the Engine

A rattle on a cold start that fades after a few seconds is the sound of a stretched timing chain or a tired tensioner. At Fangio Auto we confirm it with a diagnostic check of cam timing, then replace the chain, guides and tensioner as a set with quality parts, at both our Randburg and Hermanus branches.

What We Do

Timing Chain Work at Fangio Auto

A chain that jumps a tooth can bend valves. We replace the whole set, not just the chain.

Timing chain exposed in an engine during replacement

Chain Rattle Diagnosis

Cold-start noise checked and camshaft timing read with diagnostics, which shows a stretched chain before it jumps.

Worn timing sprocket and chain removed from an engine

Timing Chain Kit Replacement

Chain, guides, tensioner and sprockets replaced together with quality kits, then the timing set and verified.

Tensioner & Guide Replacement

Worn plastic guides and weak hydraulic tensioners, the usual cause of the rattle, replaced before the chain is damaged.

Variable Valve Timing Units

VVT phasers and solenoids that cause rough idle and timing fault codes checked and replaced where needed.

Oil Pump & Balance Shaft Chains

Secondary chains that run the oil pump and balance shafts inspected and replaced during the job while access is open.

Cambelt to Chain Advice

Not sure whether your engine has a belt or a chain? We tell you, and what the interval is, before quoting.

Warning Signs

When to Book a Check

Chain wear is gradual. These signs mean it is time for a check.

A rattle or slap on a cold start that fades after a few seconds A metallic rattle at idle from the front of the engine Check engine light with camshaft or crankshaft timing codes Rough idle or a loss of power Metal flakes in the engine oil at a service The engine has done a high mileage on a known chain-stretch engine

Why Choose Fangio

Why Owners Choose Fangio

We replace the set with quality parts and we set the timing properly. That is what stops the rattle coming back.

01

The Complete Set

A new chain on old guides and a tired tensioner rattles again within months. We replace the kit as one job.

02

Timing Verified

Cam timing is locked with the correct tools and checked with diagnostics after the build, so the engine runs as designed.

03

Both Branches

Timing chain diagnosis and replacement is done at Randburg and at Hermanus to the same standard.

Got Questions?

Timing Chain Replacement - FAQs

How do I know if my timing chain is stretched?

The most common sign is a rattle on a cold start that quietens once oil pressure builds. A diagnostic check of camshaft timing confirms it, because a stretched chain shows as a timing deviation before it fails.

Is it safe to drive with a rattling timing chain?

Not for long. If the chain jumps a tooth the valves can hit the pistons, and that turns a chain job into an engine rebuild. Book a check as soon as you hear it.

When should a timing chain be replaced?

Chains are not on a fixed interval like a cambelt, but they do wear. Some engines are known for early chain stretch, often between 100,000 and 150,000 km. We check yours and advise.

Why replace the guides and tensioner too?

The guides and tensioner wear faster than the chain and are usually the source of the noise. Fitting a new chain against worn guides wastes the labour, so the kit is replaced as one.

Does my car have a timing belt or a timing chain?

It depends on the engine, not the badge. Tell us the make, model and engine and we will tell you which it has and whether it is due.

Which branch does timing chains?

Both. Randburg and Hermanus each diagnose and replace timing chains.
