Fan Belt Replacement
We fit a correct-spec belt for your engine and set the tension properly, so it does not squeal, slip or shred.
Hermanus & Randburg
That squeal on a cold morning is usually the fan belt telling you it is perishing. It is a small part that drives big ones, the alternator, the power steering pump, the air-con and on many engines the water pump. We check the belt, the tensioner and the pulleys together, because replacing the belt alone on a worn tensioner just brings you back.

What We Do
The fan belt, also called the drive belt, auxiliary belt or serpentine belt, runs off the crankshaft and turns most of what keeps the car usable. We do the whole job, not just the belt.
We fit a correct-spec belt for your engine and set the tension properly, so it does not squeal, slip or shred.
A tired tensioner or a noisy idler bearing kills a new belt quickly. We check them with the belt off and replace what is worn.
A squeal on start-up, a chirp at full steering lock and a rhythmic tick are different faults. We find which it is before selling you a belt.
The belt drives the alternator. If a battery light brought you in, we check whether it is the belt, the tensioner or the alternator itself.
Lost cold air or heavy steering can both come back to the belt. We check the drive before condemning the compressor or the pump.
They are different belts and only one of them will destroy your engine if it snaps. We tell you which one you actually need.
Warning Signs
A fan belt gives plenty of warning before it goes. Any of these is worth a look.
Why Choose Fangio
An independent workshop with dealer-level equipment, serving both branches.
We check the tensioner and idlers while the belt is off. A new belt on a worn tensioner is a repeat visit, and we would rather do it once.
Hermanus serves the Overberg and Garden Route; Randburg covers Johannesburg and surrounds. Same standards at both.
We inspect, show you the worn belt, and quote up front. You approve before we do the work.

Got Questions?
On a modern car it is one belt driving several things off the crankshaft: the alternator that charges the battery, the power steering pump, the air-con compressor, and on many engines the water pump. You will also see it called the drive belt, auxiliary belt or serpentine belt.
It depends on the make, the model and how the car is used, so we check it against your manufacturer's schedule rather than quoting one number for every car. In practice we inspect the belt at every service and replace it when it shows cracking, fraying or glazing, whichever comes first.
A squeal on start-up, especially on a cold or damp morning, is usually a perished or slipping belt, or a tensioner that is no longer holding it properly. It is worth checking early because a belt that slips is also not driving the alternator properly.
No, and it matters. The fan belt drives accessories on the outside of the engine. The cambelt, or timing belt, is inside and keeps the engine's valves and pistons in step. A snapped fan belt will leave you stranded. A snapped cambelt can destroy the engine. We will tell you which one your car needs.
You lose charging, so the car will run on the battery until it stops. Power steering goes heavy and the air-con stops. If your engine's water pump is driven by that belt, it will also overheat, which is the expensive part. Pull over and call us rather than pushing on.
