Know the Signs
Battery, Alternator or Starter Motor?
Three parts get blamed for most no-start and flat-battery problems. These are the signs that usually point to each one, and the reason we test before we replace anything.
Usually the Battery
Slow cranking on a cold morning, a battery more than about four years old, or a car that starts after a jump but will not start again after standing overnight.
Usually the Alternator
A battery warning light while driving, lights that dim at idle and brighten when you rev, or a new battery that goes flat within days. In that case the battery is the victim, not the cause.
Usually the Starter Motor
A single click or rapid clicking with a charged battery, a grinding noise when you turn the key, or a starter that only works some of the time.
When It Is None of Them
If the battery, alternator and starter all test fine, the fault is often in the wiring, an earth strap, the ignition switch or the immobiliser. Finding it takes auto electrical fault finding, which our Hermanus branch does.

Why are electrical faults so hard to find?
Because they are often intermittent and can be caused by anything from a corroded earth to a failing sensor or chafed wiring. That is why methodical testing matters. Guessing and replacing parts gets expensive fast, so we diagnose properly first.
My ABS, traction or airbag warning light is on. Can you help?
Yes. These lights point to a specific fault, often a wheel speed sensor, wiring or, in the case of the airbag light, a worn clock spring. We diagnose the exact cause and repair it so the light stays off, rather than just clearing the code.
Do you replace car batteries and auxiliary batteries?
Yes. We test the whole charging side, the battery, alternator and, on many modern cars, the smaller auxiliary battery, then supply and fit the correct replacement so you are not left with repeat flat-battery problems.
Can you repair power windows and central locking?
Yes. Window regulators, switches, central locking and door wiring are common electrical jobs for us. We strip the door, find the failed part or broken wire and repair it.
Do you have a qualified auto electrician?
Yes, at our RMI-approved Hermanus branch. Auto electrical fault finding and repair is one of the services offered there, alongside general servicing and repairs.
Do you fit and repair parking sensors?
Yes, at our Hermanus branch. We install parking sensors on cars that do not have them and repair factory or fitted systems that have stopped working. We test each sensor, the wiring and the control unit first, so only the faulty part is replaced.
What is the difference between an auto electrician and a mechanic?
A mechanic works on the engine, brakes, suspension and other mechanical parts. An auto electrician works on the wiring, sensors, control modules, lights and the charging and starting systems. Modern cars mix the two, which is why our Hermanus branch has both in the same workshop.
Why does my battery keep going flat?
Either the battery is worn out, the alternator is not charging it, or something drains it while the car is parked. A battery and charging test shows which one it is. If the battery and alternator are fine, we measure the drain with the car locked and trace the circuit causing it.
Is it safe to drive with the ABS light on?
Your normal brakes still work, but the anti-lock function may not, so the wheels can lock under hard braking. Book the car in soon rather than living with it. If the red brake warning light is on as well, have the car checked before you drive it.
