Alternator Replacement - FAQs
What does the battery warning light actually mean?
It means the charging system is not charging, and that is normally the alternator or its belt, not the battery. The car is running on the battery alone and will stop when it is flat, so have it checked promptly.
How long can I drive with the alternator not charging?
Not far. A healthy battery might give you twenty to forty minutes with the lights off, less at night or with the aircon on. Pull over somewhere safe and arrange to get the car to us.
Can an alternator be repaired rather than replaced?
Sometimes. A failed regulator, brushes or bearing can be repaired on some units. Where a reconditioned or new unit is cheaper or more reliable we will say so in the quote.
Why does my new alternator keep failing?
Usually a poor earth, a corroded charge cable, a badly damaged battery or the wrong output rating. We check the whole circuit with every replacement for that reason.
Is a whining noise from the engine the alternator?
Often, yes. A worn alternator bearing or a failed diode pack whines and the pitch rises with engine revs. A slipping belt squeals rather than whines. We confirm which on the car.
