Renault Service Plan: Do You Have to Drive to Somerset West?

A gold Renault Duster parked outside the Fangio Auto Service workshop in Hermanus Industrial.

You drive a Renault, you live in Hermanus or somewhere else in the Overberg, and your Renault service plan says the next service is free. The catch is that the closest Renault dealer is in Somerset West. That’s roughly 90 km each way over Sir Lowry’s Pass, and most of a day gone by the time you’ve dropped the car, found a lift and gone back to fetch it.

So is the trip worth it? Sometimes yes. Sometimes it isn’t, and you’ve got more choice than most people realise. Here’s how the plan works, what your warranty actually needs, and where Fangio Auto Service Hermanus fits in.

How a Renault service plan works

A Renault service plan runs for a set period or a set distance, whichever comes first. The exact term is in your plan booklet, so check yours. Renault’s own guide says the services must be done by a Renault approved repair facility at the set intervals.

Put simply, the “free” service is only free at a Renault dealer. Renault won’t pay an independent workshop for it.

Two more things worth knowing. A service plan covers the scheduled service, and wear items like brake pads, wiper blades and tyres usually aren’t part of it. And if the plan expires before you’ve used every service, the unused ones are normally lost.

Your Renault warranty is not tied to the dealer

This is the part alot of Renault owners don’t know. Since 1 July 2021 the Competition Commission’s guidelines for the automotive aftermarket (what most people call Right to Repair) let you have your car serviced and maintained by an independent workshop while it’s under warranty. Your warranty stays valid, as long as the service follows the manufacturer’s schedule, uses the right parts and oil, and is properly recorded.

One thing doesn’t change. If something on the car fails because of a factory defect, that’s a warranty repair, and it still goes to the dealer. Servicing is yours to place where you like. There’s more detail on our Right to Repair page.

Three ways Fangio Hermanus helps Renault owners

1. Skip the Somerset West trip

We service your Renault here in Hermanus to Renault’s schedule for your model and mileage, with the correct parts and oil spec, and we stamp your service book. Your factory warranty stays intact. The difference is that you pay us for the service, because your prepaid Renault plan won’t. Some owners happily make that trade for a morning back and no drive over the pass. Others still have several free services left and use them. Both are fair calls. Ask us and we’ll tell you straight which one makes more sense for your car.

2. Claim from a third party service plan

If your plan came from an insurer or a plan provider rather than from Renault, it’s a different story. Many of those plans pay independent workshops, and we claim directly from the provider once they’ve approved the job. See how that works on our service plan page.

3. Paid services and repairs

Once the plan has run out, or when something goes wrong between services, we’re right here. Brakes, clutches, suspension, cambelts and timing chains, batteries, diagnostics and the regular vehicle service. Our Renault page has the full picture.

Renaults we see in Hermanus

Renaults are one of the makes we see most. We’ve quoted on well over a hundred of them at the Hermanus workshop: Dusters (by far the most common), Kwids, Sanderos and Stepways, Clios, Capturs, Tribers and the odd Koleos. Before we start, we look up the service schedule for your exact model, engine and mileage, so the right items get done at the right interval and your book reads properly when you sell. If you’re comparing workshops, our post on finding a Renault service centre near you covers what to look for.

Why Overberg Renault owners book with us

  • Your car stays in town. We’re at 13A Steenbras Road in Hermanus Industrial, not on the far side of the pass
  • Hermanus is an RMI-approved workshop
  • You get a stamped service book and an invoice that lists the parts and oil used, which is your proof for warranty and resale
  • A quote comes first, so the work only starts once you’ve said yes
  • Our workmanship carries a 12 month / 10 000 km warranty

Most of our Renault drivers come from Hermanus itself, Onrus, Sandbaai and Vermont. Owners from Kleinmond and Betty’s Bay often find us handier than the dealer because there’s no pass to cross, and Stanford and Gansbaai drivers can drop the car on the way into town.

Frequently asked questions

Will servicing my Renault at Fangio void the warranty?

No. Under the Right to Repair guidelines an independent workshop can service your car during the warranty period, provided the service follows Renault’s schedule, uses the right parts and is recorded. We stamp your book and keep a detailed invoice. Warranty repairs for factory faults still go to the dealer.

Can Fangio do my free Renault plan service?

Not for free, no. A prepaid Renault service plan only pays a Renault approved dealer. We can do the same service in Hermanus, but you pay for it. If your plan is from a third-party provider, send us the policy and we’ll check whether we can claim directly.

What happens to my plan if I service with you?

Your factory warranty isn’t affected. The plan service you didn’t use at the dealer is normally just lost, and plan terms differ, so read your booklet or ask Renault before you decide. Better to know that before you book.

Do you service Renaults after the plan has expired?

Yes, that’s most of our Renault work. Older Dusters, Clios and Sanderos come through every week for services, brakes, suspension and other repairs.
