Shock Absorber Replacement & Testing

Shocks wear out slowly, so most drivers never notice until the car bounces, nose-dives under braking or starts eating tyres. At Fangio Auto we test your shock absorbers, show you what is worn and replace them in pairs with quality parts, at both our Randburg and Hermanus branches.

What We Do

Shock Absorber Work at Fangio Auto

From a quick shock test to a full strut replacement with new springs and mounts.

Leaking shock absorber with its body covered in oily dust

Shock Absorber Testing

A bounce test, a visual check for leaks and a road test, so you know whether the shocks are actually worn.

Pair of new shock absorbers with yellow coil springs laid out on the workshop floor before fitting

Shock Absorber Replacement

Front or rear shocks replaced in pairs with quality parts, so damping stays even side to side.

Strut Replacement

Complete front struts replaced, including the coil spring and top mount where they are worn.

Strut Top Mounts & Bearings

Noisy or collapsed strut mounts and bearings replaced while the strut is out.

Coil Springs

Sagging or broken coil springs replaced with the shocks so the ride height and damping match.

Alignment Check

Wheel alignment checked after strut work, so the new parts do not wear out your tyres.

Got Questions?

Shock Absorbers - FAQs

How do I know my shock absorbers need replacing?

Push down hard on one corner of the car and let go. If it bounces more than once, the shock is worn. Other signs are nose-diving under braking, a floaty ride, uneven tyre wear and oil on the shock body. We can test them properly at either branch.

How often should shock absorbers be replaced?

There is no fixed interval. Most shocks last well past 80,000 km on good roads, far less on bad ones. We check them at every service and only recommend replacement when they are actually worn or leaking.

Do shocks have to be replaced in pairs?

Yes. A new shock on one side and a worn one on the other gives uneven damping, which upsets the handling and braking. We replace both shocks on the same axle.

Is it safe to drive with worn shocks?

It is not dangerous in the short term, but worn shocks lengthen your stopping distance, wear the tyres unevenly and put extra load on the springs and mounts. The sooner they are replaced, the less it costs overall.

Do you test shocks before quoting?

Yes. A knock over bumps can also be a worn stabiliser link, ball joint or bush. We test and inspect first so the quote is for the part that is actually worn.

Which branches replace shock absorbers?

Both. Shock absorber and suspension work is done at Randburg and at Hermanus. Pick your nearest branch on our contact page.
