5 Warning Signs Your Brakes Need Attention
Your car will almost always warn you before the brakes fail. These are the five signs you should not drive past.
1. Squealing when braking
What it could mean: The brake pad wear indicator may be touching the disc because the pad material is getting low.
What to do: Book a brake inspection before the pads damage the discs. Pads are usually cheaper to deal with before they wear too far.
2. Grinding or metal-on-metal noise
What it could mean: The pad may have worn down to the metal backing plate. At that point, the disc can be damaged every time you brake.
What to do: Avoid delaying this repair. Damaged discs usually cost more than pads, and braking performance can drop quickly.
3. Vibration through the steering wheel or pedal
What it could mean: A shuddering feeling under braking can point to warped, uneven, or badly worn discs.
What to do: Have the discs and pads measured. Depending on their condition, the answer may be skimming, replacement, or another brake-system repair.
4. A soft or spongy brake pedal

Brake Pads vs Brake Discs
Brake pads are the friction material that clamps against the disc to slow the vehicle. Brake discs are the metal rotors the pads press against.
Pads can often be replaced on their own if the problem is caught early. Discs may need skimming or replacement if they are scored, warped, too thin, or damaged by worn pads. Some vehicles also use rear brake shoes or drums, so the right answer depends on the vehicle.

Brake Fluid, Bleeding, and Soft Pedal Feel
Brake fluid matters because it transfers pressure from the pedal to the braking system. If the fluid is old, contaminated, low, or full of air bubbles, the pedal can feel soft and the car may not stop as confidently as it should.
