Why upgrade your car’s lights

2. LED headlight conversion

Stock halogens get tired and yellow over time. Swapping to a quality LED kit triples the brightness and lasts years longer. The fit has to match the housing, otherwise the beam scatters and you blind oncoming traffic.

3. Fog light upgrade or retrofit

Some cars come without factory fogs. We retrofit fog lights into the bumper, including the wiring back to a proper switch, and we fit better fog bulbs on cars that already have them.

4. Daytime running lights

Modern, clean, and they make your car visible to other drivers in the day. Strip-style DRLs along the lower bumper or grille area look great and pull almost no current.

5. Reverse lights

The factory reverse light on most cars is shockingly weak. A pair of LED reverse pods makes parking at night actually possible, especially for bakkies and SUVs with high tailgates.

Map lights, boot light, glovebox, vanity mirror lights. Tiny upgrade, huge difference at night when you’re hunting for something on the seat or in the cubby.

7. Spotlights and roof-mounted bars

For 4×4 owners going up toward the Overberg passes or out to the Cederberg. A roof-mounted bar adds long-distance reach for unlit dirt roads. Wiring runs through the A-pillar with proper grommets.

A real LED light bar fit on a Subaru Forester

Here is a job we did recently. A Subaru Forester came in for a custom LED light bar fitted to the lower bumper, for more reach on evening drives around the Overberg.

Step one was dropping the front bumper. You can’t fit a bar of this size cleanly without taking the bumper off. Brackets mount to the chassis behind, then the bumper goes back on around the bar.

Step two is the wiring. Power runs from the battery through an inline fuse, into a relay, out to the bar, with the trigger wire going to a dash switch. The switch only carries a tiny signal, and the heavy current goes straight to the bar through proper cabling.

Step three is testing. The electrician fires it up in the workshop, checks the beam pattern, checks the aim, and makes sure nothing else on the car has been affected. No dash warnings, no dimming, no funny behaviour from the original headlights.

The finished result is clean. From the front, you’d barely notice the bar is there in daylight. At night, it lights up the road like a stage.

What an auto electrician costs in Hermanus
